Choosing a motif for a room
Format and size are two separate decisions from the motif itself — the range currently holds twelve, each one a single nature word rendered as one motif with empty space around it. Grouped by what they depict, a rough pattern shows up in which room each kind tends to suit.
Water and movement — nami, umi, kawa
Wave, sea and river: three motifs built around motion rather than a fixed shape. On a wall they read less static than a mountain or a stone, which suits a room that already has activity in it — a living room, a hallway, anywhere people pass through rather than sit still and look.
Nami (wave), Umi (sea) and Kawa (river).
Sky and distance — sora, tsuki, hoshi
Sky, moon and star sit at the open end of the range — nothing solid in the frame, just space and a single point of light or none at all. These work well on a wall that already feels close or low-ceilinged, where a heavier, grounded motif would add more weight than the room needs.
Sora (sky), Tsuki (moon) and Hoshi (star).
Land and weight — fuji, ishi, matsu
Mountain, stone and pine are the fixed, grounded end — shapes that hold still on the page. They suit a wall that needs one clear anchor point: above a sofa, at the end of a hallway, anywhere the room benefits from a single motif that does not compete for attention with anything moving.
Fuji (Mount Fuji), Ishi (stone) and Matsu (pine).
Season and quiet — yuki, kaze, ma
Snow, wind and negative space are the quietest of the twelve — least visual weight on the page, most empty space around the mark itself. These suit a small room, or a room that already holds other objects and furniture, where a busier motif would be one thing too many.
Yuki (snow), Kaze (wind) and Ma (negative space).
Motif first, then format and size
Once a motif fits the room, the same design is available across two sizes and several finishes depending on the motif — a plain poster, a framed print, a wall hanging or a wood panel. Those are separate decisions, covered in the framed vs. unframed guide and the sizing guide.
